Step out in the early morning and you can feel the coolness in the air. I am sure many are sad to see the end of summer but just equally, many are happy to see the arrival of autumn with the crisp fall air and changing of the leaves. One of the staples of autumn in the Upstate is the Pumpkin Festival in none other than Pumpkintown, South Carolina! This annual event is being held Saturday, October 8th, 2016 at the Oolenoy Community House (5301 Dacusville Highway, Pickens, SC 29671), which was built in 1918 as an elementary school.
For those early risers, there is a 9am parade traveling down Highway 8, also known as Pumpkingtown Highway, to the Oolenoy Community Building with the festival proceeding immediately after! The grounds will be full of vendors from all over the upstate and beyond with wonderful handcrafted items, home-cooked goodies and so much more! With no fee of admission, you are free to come and browse all you would like. Also great for family and friends with children as there is an area just for rides for all ages! There is a stage for music so come and enjoy a cup of hot coffee or a slice of pumpkin pie while listening to the musicians play in the fresh mountain air. If you are interested in lunch, there will be “hot-off-the-BBQ” chicken plates for sale, served with the classic southern sides of baked beans, coleslaw, roll, and sweet tea. We would be remiss for not mentioning that you may also purchase your pumpkins here too! Whether to decorate or to cook, Pumpkintown is the place to stock up on fresh pumpkins for the season.
The festival will wind down at 5pm so be sure to come early enough to relish all the arts and crafts, appealing foods, and live music.
