Only an hour drive from The Cliffs at Keowee Falls or The Reserve at Lake Keowee, the area of Highlands has much to offer. With an elevation over 4,000 feet, this is one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River! Not only is the drive enchanting, but the shops are charming as well. Everything from boutique jewelry to kitchen utensils, fine linens to outdoor equipment, the shops of Highlands have it all. While in town, you must stay to enjoy the culinary goodness this town has to offer. Everything from casual lunch to fine dining is available and will treat your taste buds.
The Highlands area is surrounded by much to do in the way of outdoor activities. The Nantahala National Forest surrounds Highlands and gives ample opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. For example, Whiteside Mountain rises to nearly 5,000 feet and is accessed by a moderate 2-mile loop hike that takes you to the top of this cliff. Many stunning waterfalls are in this area and not all require a long hike. In the summer time, Silver Run Falls is popular as this waterfall also features a swimming spot and is a short walk from the highway. You can drive behind Bridal Veil Falls, great for those wanting to experience a waterfall without the walking required.
