One of the many treasures of our area (too many to count, in truth!) is Whitewater Falls Upper just inside the neighboring state of North Carolina. This spectacular waterfall is actually a combination of cascades and true waterfalls all in one stunning drop.
If coming from South Caroling into North Carolina on 130, just as you cross the state line, look to your right for the paved road that takes you to the parking lot. Please note, there is a fee.
From here, you walk the half mile paved trail to view the waterfall. Along the way, you can see various wildflowers and hints of Lake Jocassee views through the trees. Once at end of the trail, you have Whitewater Falls Upper to greet you. Although you could stop here, the best view is down the 150+ wooden steps to a viewing platform. Don’t worry, there is a bench half-way down the sets of stairs to catch one’s breath!
If you so desire, you may hike to Whitewater Falls Upper from the Foothills Trail, which takes you along the river part of the way and is truly scenic. (Please stay on the trails!)
We hope you enjoy exploring this wonderful area we call home!
